What is "Doo-Wop"?

This is a question we get asked pretty regularly. Doo-Wop is a distinctly American musical genre, which flourished in the 1950's and early 1960's, right up until the British Invasion, when the Beatles, and other British groups stole the show, and turned the pop music world topsy-turvy, almost overnight.

The groups featured three, and four-part harmonies, with strong bass vocal lines, and lead vocals which frequently reached into the high falsetto ranges. They were characterized by nonsensical syllables such as "doobie-do-ah", "shoo-vap shoo-vah","doo-ah-doo", etc. It was a time of great fun and had a lasting effect on pop music. Even today, these songs are as entertaining as ever! For a more detailed history of Doo-Wop music, here is an excellent link: The Doo-Wop Sound
